Designing your flower beds and creating planting schemes can be a tricky process. It involves many considerations and thoughts, alongside a good understanding of plants. It can be a challenging task for experienced and amateur gardeners alike.

Flower Bed Design Consultations with John Foley.
You can now come to The Nursery and have a one-on-one design consultation with John, our owner, expert plantsman, recognised horticulturist, and RHS Master Grower.
You will get a chance to discuss what you are looking to achieve. Whether you’re looking to create new flower beds in your garden, or you already have some beds that need attention. Perhaps you want to achieve a particular style, such as a Cottage, Meadow, or Japanese garden, but aren’t sure how to attain that, and which plants would work. You may even want a complete overhaul and re-design of your entire outdoor space.
In this initial consultation with John, he can use his years of knowledge to help bring your ideas to fruition.
The consultation
The consultations will be different for everyone depending on what your garden/space needs are, but as an example, you could discuss.
Planting schemes/styles - including English Garden, Cottage Garden, White Garden, and more.
How you can work with your particular space, considering your aspects; sun/shade, soil type, and surroundings.
Visual variation using height, colour - creating beds that bloom and have visual interest all season.
Plant considerations – what plants work/grow well together, stylistically, and practically. What plants will be suitable for your beds? Which plants are easier to maintain for beginners or those who are busy, and which plants need more care and attention, for the more experienced, green-fingered folk.
John will draw up a basic sketch of what you discuss and can achieve in your flower beds and give you an estimate of costings (if you choose to do it through Holden Clough.)
After the consultation
If you decide you’d like to go ahead, John’s sketch and ideas will be passed on to our experienced Holden Clough design team, who will draw and map it out fully and exact plants, shrubs, trees, etc. picked, confirmed, and then delivered to you with a planting scheme and maintenance guides.
There is of course no obligation to do it through us, or straight away. You can simply come for a consultation and get some ideas and inspiration from an expert designer and nurseryman.
