About this style
The popularity of Meadow or, sometimes known as Prairie planting is thanks in part to our growing understanding of, and concern for the environment.
The emergence of the New Perennial movement has championed this naturalistic planting style, but it was horticulturalist William Robinson who, as early as 1870, published ‘The Wild Garden’ as a reaction against the formality of Victorian planting and the use of bedding, rather than using permanent plants, and the emerging threats to the natural world posed by the Industrial Revolution.
The style has evolved to incorporate many varieties of flowering perennials and grasses, planted to imitate the way the would grow together in the wild, whilst looking effortlessly beautiful, providing valuable food and habitat for wildlife.
